The word HUMAN comes from the Latin humanus, thought to be a hybrid relative of homo, meaning “man,” and humus, meaning “earth.”
The BBC Earth website asserts that 'to be human is to be at the centre of our own universe, to experience life in all its colours and all its potential.....the awe of being alive and the thrill of discovering what it means to be us, the greatest wonder in the world.'
It is a glorious invitation.
To become more human.
Terrifying and exhilarating in equal measure.
The downside - the messiness of mystery, the discombobulation of not knowing and the roller coaster of experience.
The upside - the joy, the wonder and the thrill of being alive.
And yet the foundation of business was concretised by the Industrial Revolution.
The transition from hand to machine production, the use of steam and water power, machine tools and the mechanised factory system saw an unprecedented population growth, expanding markets and the need for process, order, structure, automation.
Modern business has emerged from the legacy of the industrial revolution - operating to standards, targets, benchmarks, KPIs.
We have become automaton.
Living a regimented, disciplined life, operating by rote in service to work in return for security. Hypnotised by the 'system'.
Where is "man" firmly rooted to the earth?
Wake up. Be more tree!
1. Feel your feet on the earth
2. Stretch your body to the sky
3. Cultivate inner sense and stillness
4. Be compassionate
5. Be nourished
