Despite evidence to the contrary ‘we’ continue to believe that ‘creativity’ is the preserve of a special group of people. There is talk about ‘creatives’ and the ‘creative industries’ as if there are non-creatives and non creative industries.
The UK Government Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) defines the creative industries as:
"Those industries which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property."
And then has the temerity to define which industries are creative [1]. Re-read that quote - industries which have their origin in individual creativity.
Steve Jobs famously said "creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while.”
It is inherent in being human that we connect things that are obvious to us; we may not be as well know as Steve Jobs for our creativity but we ALL have this capacity and capability, we can all engage this capacity and to a greater or lesser extent we all DO this naturally - it just may not be to design a new piece of technology, paint a piece of art, write a book or design a new video game.
To quote Steve Jobs, one of our more visible ‘creatives’ - “one of the ways that I believe people express their appreciation to the rest of humanity is to make something wonderful and put it out there. And you never meet the people. You never shake their hands. You never hear their story or tell yours. But somehow, in the act of making something with a great deal of care and love, something’s transmitted there. And it’s a way of expressing to the rest of our species our deep appreciation. So we need to be true to who we are and remember what’s really important to us.”
There’s lots of ways to be, as a person and there are oodles of ways that we transmit our care and our love. Perhaps it is cooking a meal, looking after a sick child, digging the veggie patch, being the sunshine at your place of work or being the diligent one who ensures all the I’s are dotted and the T’s are crossed. Perhaps it is just showing up. We each express ourselves, our appreciation and our inherent creativity in different ways.
Acknowledge your creativity, your inherent natural perspective on the world and how you join the dots in a way that is just so you and like no one else. Acknowledge it and then start to see it.
