Surrender is the white flag above the parapet of my consciousness.
It was there when my plan for an in-person festival was jeopardised by an integrity issue with the venue I booked. It was there in a conversation with a client who braved COVID temperatures of 104 degrees for over 8 days in a row, it was there in the session with a second client whose visitation with COVID took him to the mythological belly of the whale and there again in a recent masterclass presentation by Sara Mallett to my Creators Circle.
In all of these instances it was surrender that unlocked the gold and revealed the silver linings, surrender that pulled the pin on resistance and opened the way for life's energy to pour through the breach, to cleanse the soul, to burn away all that was inessential.
Eckhart Tolle asks us to “Always say “yes” to the present moment." He ponders - "What could be more futile, more insane, than to create inner resistance to what already is?"
What indeed and yet it is what we do. When our plans don't go to plan [sic], when things don't work as we expect them to, when outside events crash through the walls of our carefully constructed imaginings. We reflexively resist. We are the little Dutch boy putting our finger in the dam. And guess what - that is ok, it is ok to be human. We are ALL human.
The trick, to consider Tolle's question "What could be more insane than to oppose life itself, which is now and always now?" Then to check in with ourselves, to be honest about why we think resistance is necessary.
In our masterclass Sara, writer, coach and Founder of Living By Design, introduced us to the Beat Sheet, a writing technique that she masterfully crafted to apply to our lives. A beat being a moment of tension, crisis, transformation in a story, in this case in the time line of our lives. By looking at a beat and shining light on the silver lining that it afforded us we all saw the role of surrender. Some of us surrendered more readily and sooner than others but ultimately we all saw the beauty and magnificence of that moment when we said "yes" to spirit, when we let go of the resistance and stepped into the ease and flow of the slipstream of life working for us rather than against us.
How is resistance showing up for you right now? And in what way could you say "yes" to life?
Surrender is not about giving up, or giving in, it is about stepping onto the dance floor of existence and into the tango of life.
