What is synergy or, more interestingly, how do we create synergy?
Stephen Covey defined it as "The combined effect of individuals in collaboration that exceeds the sum of their individual effects."
As a definition it cannot be faulted but the definition does not synergy create.
In a practical sense synergy is a bit illusive, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't, most of us know what it is and, on occasion, have experienced it.
Synergy is delicious; together you have been faster, more powerful and achieved more than what you thought was possible. Most likely you got more done in the time than you thought was possible, pulled solutions like rabbits out of a hat, burned the candle at both ends and still felt exhilarated eough to punch your way to a victorious completion.
How many times have you stepped into a collaboration or co-creation with best intentions and full of optimism and hope, to discover the hard edges of opposing personalities and bickering, the oppression of competing agendas and the damp squib of disappointed dreams.
Optimism, hope and best intentions are not the ingredients that create synergy.
Synergy is a superman experience - "Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound!"
The secret of synergy is spirit, and the level of magic that gets created is directly correlated to each individual's ability to be led by spirit.
Spirit-led collaboration fosters synergy; the creation of unexpected opportunities, the optimisation of everyone's gifts, talents and differences and the magic of sharing so much more than a working relationship.
Spirit-led co-creation takes showing up, it takes mastery and it takes balls.
I am working with Taylor Roark and Paula Jones in a spirit-led creation at the moment, we are working with spirit every step of the way; being real and vulnerable, stretching and growing, discovering new insights about ourselves and what is possible together.
Spirit-led creating guarantees synergy and synergy is magic. We also choose to live life on our terms and work in ways that nourish, entertain and excite us. I love this photo of our recent 4 day intensive in Corfu - working hard, having fun and eating ice-cream!
