Simon Haas in The Book Of Dharma says that “our character is not reflected in the gifts that we are endowed with at birth, or the skills that we improve but in the choices we make over the course of a lifetime.”
Dharma is a code of Hindu wisdom that was taught to kings and rulers and not available to mere mortals. Transmitted through sanskrit stories such as the epic Mahabarata, deciphering this wisdom required time, study and experienced teachers and guides.
Simon has beautifully extracted the essence of the Bhagavad Gita - one of the episodes of the Mahabarata - and created a book that marries the mythology of the east with rational sensibility of the west.
There are many elements that are worthy of consideration in our modern life, character is just one. The Dharma code presents us with a reframe or a premise that offers us freedom. Freedom to know that whatever our starting point in life we do not have to be defined by it and that while we are alive we always have the opportunity to hone, refine and enhance our characters one conscious choice at a time.
