In August 2012 I was sitting on an escarpment overlooking the ancient beginnings of civilisation in Swaziland in Africa. In the dusty haze I imagined a trail emerging laid out across scrubby, foreign land, a long, long walk leading all the way to the sea and, I fantasised a handsome sailor in a pea green boat.
Two months later I was walking the Camino de Santiago de Compostela in Northern Spain. Almost 1000 km from the border with France to the Coast of Death in Galicia. Every step taking me deeper into the land, my edges softened by rock, my spirit dissolving in earth, the raging energy of the elements becomes my wildness, I breathe in the desire of soul symbiosis and exhale ecstasy.
Did I buy boots – yes Salomon Ultra X. Did I take time to research my pack – yes it was an Osprey just the right size, complete with a built in hydration pack (fancy name for bag of water), did I carry a guidebook – yes a ‘John Brierley’, did I train – well maybe – if you count a couple of days of extra long walks (2 hours anyway!).
But the Camino isn’t about the practicalities. It’s about something more spiritual. It is about surrender. About stepping beyond the self and into something wilder, something timeless. When I returned, my path led me to Andrew Priestly, curator of the My Camino Walk books, who invited me to share my story. The End is Nigh became one of 20 voices, each offering a unique prism of Camino experience—from the grit of physical endurance to the raw vulnerability of spiritual transformation.
The Camino is a metaphor for life. How we walk it—how we experience each moment—depends entirely on the lens we choose. My journey taught me that we are not bound to a single perspective. There are infinite ways to see, endless angles to explore.
So, what if you could shift your lens at will? What if life itself became a playground of perception?
With 25+ years of experience delivering high-tech solutions to transform businesses, I combine introspective perception work with hands-on, practical guidance. My clients don’t just dream—they build, they create, they become.
