The people you work with are no different from the people you love and care about.Â
They too are human.Â
They have bills to pay, mouths to feed, they have to get up in the morning and put their best foot forwards, perhaps they don't get on with their boss, or they unhappy with their work, maybe they are struggling with depression or trying to get their head above water after heart break.
It isn't your fault that work and business has dehumanised us - we have inherited a model from the Industrial Revolution that is focused on productivity and growth.
The good news is that our world is changing.
The pandemic has physically changed how many of us work. Instead of commuting to an office, work is zoomed into our homes, midst our family and community.Â
It has opened our eyes to the good and the bad.Â
On the plus side perhaps there are renewed connection with the kids, time for the neighbours, gardening or other hobbies, walking the neighbourhood or deeper intimacy with our partners.
On the minus side perhaps we are noticing the impact of our absence in our close relationships, or seeing the lack of intimacy at home, maybe we realise we prefer to be at the office rather than at home, and maybe we don't like where we live or who we live with.Â
Home isn't a place, generally, where we operate like automatons or robots, where we punish each other for forgetting to take the dishes out of the dishwasher or take the dog for a walk.Â
Home is a place we have learnt to negotiate, establish ways of working together and noticing when someone might need a hug or a cuppa.
Let's bring this caring and consideration into our work lives, back into the office.Â
Let's be kind not cut throat.
Let's see each other as human, let's see work as a place to work together, not in competition.Â
Let's do it one small kind action at a time.Â
