A long time ago,
I applied to go back to University after I started working.
I realised that I wasn't ready for the working world.
Although I wanted a better qualification to leverage my career what I really craved was the opportunity to be a student.
Based on my experience, and not a little to do with my lack of funds, I wanted to skip the 1st year and be admitted to the 2nd year of a Bachelor of Business Computer Systems degree.
I remember I was interviewed by a very nice man, a bit geeky if I recollect.
I was galvanised to make my case at the interview.
He assiduously questioned me about my rational for jumping into second year and cautioned that there might be a bit of catch up.
I was enthusiastic about my commitment to do whatever I needed to do to bring myself up to speed including 'labs' whatever they were!
My enthusiasm was well received and I left confident that I had it in the bag.
When I received the admissions letter I discovered that I did indeed have it in the bag but I had been interviewed by the wrong interviewer for the wrong course.
I managed to get myself into the 2nd year of an Electrical Engineering degree!
A coup indeed but certainly not a course that would play to my strengths or that I could in all honesty be enthusiastic about in any way shape or form.
Fortunately all I had to do was ask for the place to be transferred to my preferred course. No further interview was required.
This experience taught me a lot about the power of being in the end result. I may have been a little off the mark but my energy, my enthusiasm and my belief that the place was already mine carried a lot more weight than my past experience or educational record.
This is how imagination creates.
