The ABC Of Imagination Technology is series of posts aiming to distill and simplify some pretty convoluted and contested intellectual definitions, ideas and concepts so you can hone your imagination as a purposeful tool of creating.

What is Awareness?
Awareness is the concept of knowing, perceiving and being cogniscent of what is happening around us and in us. In the realm of the Imagination Technologist it is obvious that we are creating all the time and always. Awareness is the determinant of the quality of those creations and how well the reality that we experience is an expression of our potential.
I work with premise that there are two modes of awareness available to us as creators.
Perception - for simplicity encompasses awareness based on definitions and assumptions of the world, others and ourselves based on past experience. Over time and through reinforcement our past experience becomes concretized in our consciousness as fundamental beliefs about the way things work and how to get what it is that we want or need. Perception assumes we exist separately from the rest of the Universe - that we are 'a drop in the ocean. This mode of awareness can only create more of what has already been created, there is no innovation, creativity or change available to us in this mode of awareness.
Intuition - imagination or superconscious awareness, to quote Rumi, assumes that, rather than being '“a drop in the the ocean, we are the entire ocean in a drop.” We are spiritual as much as incarnate beings and Quantum Physics confirms that we are energy inherently connected to everything through time and space.
Both of these modes of awareness co-exist in us. I liken it to being a standalone computer limited to the possibilities of what is already available on my hard disk or being connected to the cloud where I have access to knowledge and programs from many diverse sources. A limiting metaphor, in reality, as our super conscious mode of awareness is far vaster than the puny notion of cloud based computing and our perception is far more intricate than the most sophisticated laptops currently available.
Why is Awareness important?
The mode of awareness that we employ directly determines how we experience life and, more importantly, the quality of what we create and how well it actualises our potential in the world. Imagination is the mechanism for creating and it can either be informed by perception of intuition. As an Imagination Technologist knowing the difference between the two fundamental modes of awareness facilitates choice, the choice between taking action on our perception of what is going on based on past experience, our unconscious beliefs and definitions OR to taking action in favour of our potential unlimited by the past and unfettered by circumstances.
Consider the usefulness of perception to orientate us in life, to know where we live, to know how to brush out teeth, to understand the rules of the road, that a green traffic light means go, a red traffic light means stop. We couldn’t survive as humans without the data bank of perception BUT it is not innovative or creative - that is where intuition and imagination come in..
A Tip:
Assume that you, like most humans, are functioning in life from your perception - your learning and understanding of the way the world is based, initially on your experience from conception to the age of seven when your brain is absorbing huge amounts of information effortlessly, continuously, and indiscriminately. 85% of the core brain structure is developed by the time you are 5. This is your foundation for the rest of your life.[1]
A distinction between perception and intuition is the ‘need to know’. Perception is driven by the need to know. Superconscious awareness is free of this need and can be consider a state of ‘in no sense’. As Imagination Technologists we strategically access in service to creating our fullest potential.
This is short guidance will give you an experience of your superconscious awareness beyond and separate to your perception - check it out.
